Jordan initiated a ‘democratic process’ in 1989. Although it was maintained for thirty years, Jordan was not transformed into a democratic country. The thirtieth anniversary coincided with a second wave of protests to demand change. The book revisits the Islam-democracy incompatibility paradigm. The analyses of why there were improvements and setbacks need to see beyond the simple answer of claiming an essential incompatibly between democracy and Islam/ism.
